As an indicative reference based on Ferretto projects in Italy, an Eurot vertical storage carousel generally falls within a range of €25,000 to €50,000, while the investment for a Vertimag vertical lift module frequently falls between €30,000 and €80,000. Larger configurations, with higher load capacities, special access openings, a high number of trays, advanced software, integrations or specific accessories can exceed €100,000.

Vertimag XXL and Plus versions, developed to increase storage capacity or handle particularly large and bulky materials, normally sit in higher investment ranges. For systems such as Steel Tower, designed for the automated storage of sheet metal, bars and profiles, the solution is engineered to order and the investment can exceed €100,000.

What determines the cost of an automated vertical storage system?

A VLM, or Vertical Lift Module, is not a completely standard machine. It is configured around the materials to be stored, the available space and the way the warehouse is used.

 

Key cost items:

  • machine height, width and depth;
  • number, dimensions and load capacity of trays;
  • number and type of picking access openings;
  • accessories for picking, identification and material protection;
  • software and warehouse management level;
  • integration with ERP, WMS or other company systems;
  • transport and installation;
  • any site works or adaptations required;

1. Dimensions, height and storage capacity

The dimensions of the machine are among the first factors that determine cost.

A taller machine or one with greater capacity normally requires a higher investment, but it can also make better use of the available building volume and free up floor space.

For this reason, sizing should start from actual warehouse data: number of items, dimensions and weight of materials, quantities stored, picking frequencies and expected growth.

Vertimag offers a broad range of configurations so that capacity, dimensions and load capacity can be adapted to actual needs, avoiding as far as possible the purchase of unnecessary space or performance.

2. Number and type of picking access openings

The picking access opening also affects the price of a vertical lift module.

Vertimag can be configured with different access solutions — internal or external, single or multiple — depending on available space, picking flows and operational requirements.

A configuration with a standard access opening will have a different cost impact compared, for example, with a machine featuring dual access openings, external access openings or the Ergo-Tech® access opening, designed to improve accessibility, ergonomics and safety during picking operations.

The choice of access opening is therefore not only about the price of the machine: it also affects picking speed, work organisation and workstation ergonomics.

3. Software: how much does it affect the cost of a vertical lift module?

Software is another component that can change the project cost, but the required level depends on what the company wants to manage.

On Vertimag, Vertimag OS is included as standard and allows the machine to be controlled and operated directly. In many applications this may be sufficient, so adding a WMS is not automatically necessary.

When broader warehouse management is required, EJLog can be added to manage stock, picking, movements, traceability and inventory, connecting not only automated storage systems but also conventional shelving, locations and floor-storage areas within one system.

If the company already uses an ERP or WMS, Vertimag can instead be connected to existing systems via Socket Link or other integration interfaces.

Software cost therefore depends on the actual requirement: the machine operating system may be enough, or a higher level of management and integration may be needed.

Costs over time should also be considered, such as licences, updates, software support or specific developments.

4. Transport, assembly and installation

The price of a vertical lift module does not depend only on the machine itself.

Transport and installation can also affect the overall project cost, especially when the site has specific constraints.

Elements to evaluate may include:

  • distance and transport method;
  • accessibility of the building;
  • handling of machine components;
  • building height and characteristics;
  • any seismic requirements;
  • required lifting equipment;
  • plant and utility adaptations;
  • additional site works;
  • assembly time and complexity.

In some projects, the transfer of materials from the previous storage system to the new automated warehouse may also need to be considered.

5. Accessories and customisation

Not every application requires the same equipment.

The project may include accessories to improve identification, picking, safety or material organisation, as well as special configurations required by the production or logistics process.

The higher the level of customisation, the more the price may move away from the range of a standard configuration.

This is why two vertical storage systems from the same product family can have significantly different costs.

6. Maintenance and support: consider the cost over time

An automated vertical storage system is an asset designed to operate for many years. The initial price therefore represents only part of the total cost of ownership.

Over time, preventive maintenance, spare parts, technical support, software updates, training and other services may come into play.

The potential cost of machine downtime should also be considered, especially when the VLM stores materials that are essential for production or order preparation.

To evaluate the investment, it is therefore useful to consider not only how much it costs to purchase the vertical storage system, but also how much it costs to operate and maintain it throughout its life cycle.

What is it worth to solve the current problem?

The price of the machine is only one part of the evaluation. To understand whether the investment is worthwhile, it is useful to compare it with the costs and limitations of the current situation.

If the warehouse is full, for example, the alternatives may include extending the building, renting additional space, moving materials between sites or using floor area that could otherwise be dedicated to production.

If the problem is picking, travel time, item search time, errors and rework all come into play.

These issues are often joined by other critical factors: long and complex inventory counts, difficulty knowing what is available and where it is located, misplaced materials or untracked withdrawals, theft risk, damaged goods and uncontrolled access.

All of these elements have a cost, even when they do not appear directly as a dedicated warehouse line item in the accounts.
